H Steel Product Details
1. Definition
H steel, also known as universal beam, is an economic cross – section high – efficiency profile with a more optimized cross – section area distribution and a more reasonable strength – to – weight ratio. It gets its name because its cross – section is similar to the English letter “H”. The cross – section of H steel usually consists of a web and two flanges, which are also called the waist and edges.
2. Features
2.1 Superior Mechanical Properties
- Excellent Bending Resistance: With all parts arranged at right angles, H steel has good bending resistance in all directions. It is about 5% – 10% stronger in bending resistance than ordinary I – beams, and can effectively withstand bending moments.
- High Load – Bearing Capacity: The wide flanges and thin web endow H steel with significantly better section modulus, moment of inertia and corresponding strength than ordinary I – beams of the same unit weight. It can greatly improve the load – bearing capacity and save 10% – 40% of metal.
- Good Structural Stability: Its unique cross – section shape provides high structural stability, performing well under pressure loads and eccentric loads.
2.2 Convenient Processing and Installation
- Easy Connection: The parallel inner and outer sides of the flanges and the right – angled ends make it convenient to assemble and combine into various components. This can save about 25% of the welding and riveting work, greatly accelerating the construction speed and shortening the construction period.
- Easy to Process: The regular cross – section shape is convenient for processing operations such as cutting and drilling, and can meet the needs of various complex structures.
2.3 Good Economic Performance
- Material Saving: Compared with ordinary I – beams, under the condition of meeting the same strength requirements, it can save 10% – 40% of metal, reduce the self – weight of the structure and lower the cost of the foundation project.
- Increased Usable Area: Compared with concrete structures, hot – rolled H – steel structures can increase the usable area by 6%, while the structural self – weight is reduced by 20% – 30%, and the internal force of the structural design is reduced.
3. Classification
3.1 Classification by Flange Width
- Wide – Flange H Steel (HW): The flange width B is greater than or equal to the web height H, generally used for column materials.
- Medium – Flange H Steel (HM): The flange width is between that of wide – flange and narrow – flange H steel.
- Narrow – Flange H Steel (HN): The flange width B is approximately half of the web height H, often used for beam materials.
3.2 Classification by Product Purpose
- H – Steel Beam: Mainly bears bending loads and is used for floor beams, roof beams, etc. in buildings.
- H – Steel Column: Used to bear axial pressure and bending moment, and is an important load – bearing component in buildings.
- H – Steel Pile: Used in foundation engineering to transfer the load of buildings to the deep foundation.
- Extra – Thick Flange H – Steel Beam: Suitable for special engineering parts that bear large loads and bending moments.
3.3 Classification by Production Method
- Welded H Steel: The appropriately thick strip steel is cut into the appropriate width, and the flanges and the web are welded together in a continuous welding unit. Its advantages are that it can produce H steel of various specifications, but it has disadvantages such as high metal consumption, difficulty in ensuring uniform product performance, and limited size specifications.
- Rolled H Steel: In modern steel rolling production, universal rolling mills are used to roll H steel. The product has high dimensional accuracy, uniform performance, and high production efficiency, which is the main production method of H steel.
3.4 Classification by Size Specification
- Large – Size H Steel: The web height H is above 700mm.
- Medium – Size H Steel: The web height H is between 300 – 700mm.
- Small – Size H Steel: The web height H is less than 300mm.
4. Specifications
Internationally, the product standards of H steel are divided into two major systems: the imperial system and the metric system. The United States, the United Kingdom and other countries use the imperial system, while China, Japan, Germany, Russia and other countries use the metric system. Although the measurement units used in the imperial and metric systems are different, the specifications of H steel are mostly represented by four dimensions: web height h, flange width b, web thickness d and flange thickness t.
5. Application Fields
- Construction Field: Widely used in large – scale building structures such as steel – structure factories, high – rise buildings, and bridges. As main structural components such as beams and columns, it bears the self – weight and various loads of buildings to ensure the safety and stability of the building structure.
- Mechanical Manufacturing Field: Can be used to manufacture components such as frames, brackets, and workbenches of various mechanical equipment, meeting the various requirements of mechanical equipment during operation.
- Shipbuilding Field: Used to manufacture structural components such as the frames and deck supports of ship hulls. Its corrosion resistance and strength can meet the usage requirements of ships in the marine environment.
- Power Industry: Can be used to manufacture power tower frames, substation frameworks and other power facilities, bearing various loads and wind forces during the operation of power facilities.
- Other Fields: It can also be applied to highway guardrail supports, mine support, foundation treatment and dam projects, various machine components, and the girder brackets of trains, automobiles, and tractors.
6. Production Process
6.1 Welded H Steel Production Process
Steel plate → automatic slitting → assembly → automatic submerged arc welding → flaw detection → flange straightening → web straightening → end – face processing → sandblasting and rust removal → painting.
6.2 Rolled H Steel Production Process
First, heat the raw materials, and then feed them into the universal rolling mill for rolling. The web of the H steel is rolled between the upper and lower horizontal rolls, and the flanges are simultaneously rolled into shape between the side of the horizontal roll and the vertical roll. After that, through processes such as cooling, straightening, and surface treatment, the finished product is finally obtained.
